The Gothic time period took place from 1140 to 1500

- The 1163 constitution begins at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris
- 1180-1192 Third Crusades
- 1280 Eyeglasses are invented in Italy
- 1337-1453 One hundred years of war between the French and English
- 1347 Black Plague begins in Europe
- Gothic Society
- Paris was the center of the Gothic world
- Churches were the center of city life
- New rivals between city-states and nations
- Competition in the construction of cathedrals
- Knighthood, chivalry, and artisan guilds
- The Black Plague killed 75 million people which was about a third of the population
- Religion
- Religious expression heat of design

- Relics of saints replaced with adoration of the Virgin Mary (Notre Dame)

- One Step Further: Abbot Suger was a French abbot and adviser to kings Louis VI and VII. He supervised the rebuilding of the abbey church of Saint-Denis and was a crucial developer of the Gothic style and architecture.

ReplyDeleteEli- this Blog post was great. I appreciate how you began by summarizing the historical events leading us into the Gothic period. You then gave us the important characteristics of a gothic cathedral. Ending with several strong examples of the most outstanding Cathedrals was perfect. Please include more current applications. Abbot Suger was an important figure during this time. In order to receive more points on the "One Step Further" provide a paragraph or two on the contributions of the person you look into and support with images.45/50 points
